Biography

Amanda Sobhy is a brilliant junior, battling with Nour El Tayeb during her junior years. She is a finalist of the British Junior Open and junior world champion on her seventeenth birthday. She then studied at Harvard University. On the professional circuit, she quickly imposed herself and she became the American player.

 

Then 6th in the world, in March 2017 she suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in the semi-finals of the Ciudad de Floridablanca tournament when she had 5 match points against her compatriot Olivia Blatchford. She made her comeback 9 months later during the Champions Tournament. Two months later, she won the Texas Open. At US Open 2018, she eliminated world 13th Victoria Lust then defending champion Nour El Tayeb before losing in the quarter-finals to Camille Serme. In February 2019, she returned to the top 10. In December 2020, during the Black Ball Squash Open tournament, she won against world No. 1 and world champion Nour El Sherbini. In March 2021, she lost in the Black Ball Squash Open against Nour El Sherbini. Thanks to these good results, she becomes the first American player to enter the top 5.

 

In July 2021 during the 2020-2021 World Championships, she became the first player born in the United States to reach the semi-finals. In September 2021, she again won the Netsuite Open, which allowed her in the October ranking to be the first native player from the United States to reach a third place in the world.
